What is a diet?

What is the main goal?

The daily calorie requirement

If the goal is to build muscle mass, then a slightly higher calorie balance is needed. The optimum nutrient ratio

The relation of the nutritional value of proteins, carbohydrates and fats is dependent on the needs of the individual for the sport/activity they are involved in. Using the same example, if the 26 year old man was an athlete, he would require a nutrient distribution of the following:

  • Carbohydrates: 45 – 55%
  • Protein: 20-25%
  • Fats: 20-25%

Carbohydrates: 3846 kcal x 55% = 2115.30 kcal

Selection of the appropriate foods

It is now clear how much energy per day is required and at what amounts it should be consumed in the form of macronutrients. But how do you practically implement this?, what foods are actually available?

Meals – how many and when?

How many meals per day is then required to ensure all the nutrients in the foods are utilised properly. Depending on the kind of athlete, meal times and schedules vary although most sporting professionals have five to six meals at intervals of two to three hours are ideal each day.

There should be an equal weighting of proteins uniformly for each meal. Breakfast should not be ignored or skipped and should be low in fat and the last meal of the day should contain only a moderate amount of carbs.

Possible distribution of calories in each meal:

  • Breakfast – 25%
  • Early – 10%
  • Lunch – 30%
  • Afternoon snack – 10%
  • Dinner – 25%

Converted to the earlier example, it would result approximately in the following calorie breakdown:

In the modified version of this distribution with six meals, dinner can be reduced to 15% with an extra meal eaten just before bedtime (remaining 10%). Monitoring the changes

You now know how the diet plan can be created and can apply it. There still however bears the question: how do you check if your planning is bearing fruit?. There are various monitoring methods available which can provide important information as to whether the diet plan created can be maintained or perhaps needs to be changed.

Weighing
